Social Media – Should i give up on it?

Social media, are you thinking of giving up on it? Maybe you have a love/hate relationship with it? I feel many businesses have this same problem, so thought i would write this blog post to help you out.

So you’ve tried everything on Facebook and nothing is happening? Tweeted a bunch but don’t really know what Twitter is all about? Posted a few Instagram pictures and no interaction and don’t understand the importance of great hashtags? So what do you do…. give up… or you could just take another look at your relationship with social media and how you are using it.

Here’s the thing with social media…

The first thing to remember is that it is there to build relationships with audiences, with people you would never have been able to connect with before. RELATIONSHIPS – that is the key word right there. So, the first thing you need to look at is how you are using social media for your business. This could be the game changer right here.

If you’re desperately trying to sell, the chances are all you’re doing is trying to ‘sell, sell, sell’ and people just don’t like that. This has never been my approach and i find it works a dream to not be salesy.

Here is another way to use social media – to network, get to know your audience and treat them like they are real people and not a statistic. There’s a thought right? This is for the long haul, not a short term fix. I am on my platforms daily, in my Facebook group daily and talking to people about many things that are not related to my business. Why? Because i am building relationships and even making friends with these people. People will always buy from those they know, like and trust.

The above are two very different approaches and could have a big impact on how they work for you and your business. Which way do you use it?

Is social media harming your business?

If all you’re doing on your social media platforms in trying to sell to people, you could very well be harming your social media platforms and putting people off.

Are you showing the heart and soul of your business? Using well lit (not dark and dim) images on Instagram? Actually… on all your social media platforms. Are your bios set up full of info with a link to a well put together website?

We all set up our business social media platforms because we thought they were a good idea right? And they still are a great idea. Sometimes we set up all the platforms available and try to spread ourselves too thin. So how about you just choose 2 platforms to put your heart and soul into? Once you’ve cracked those fully (that could take months) then think about adding another platform, but only when the other 2 are doing well and are more established.

Remember, social media is about building relationships before you try and sell. Secondly, it is about consistency. If you’re not consistent, your audience will move on.

  2. Interesting thoughts. Many businesses use Social Media for “driving traffic and lead generation” which is WRONG. They should focus on the engagement side of things for it to truly be successful!

  4. Social media is so part and parcel of our everyday lives now I don’t think anyone could really “give up” on it. But yeah, it’s not a place for a hard sell. It’s a place to connect and network and above all, have fun.

  5. I love social media, I think the most important thing is to remember to be social! I used to be worried about numbers but today I just focus on content!

  6. You have some great advice. I certainly have a love/hate relationship with social media, especially Facebook. Too many people care about numbers rather than engagement and the follow/unfollow game annoys me.

    • Yes i completely agree. It’s about the quality of your audience and finding where that audience is.

  7. This is a very interesting take on social media, and there is a lot of truth with what you said. It’s true some businesses do hurt themselves, there are so many in’s and out’s with it, it’s a learning process.

    • It’a all abut finding that balance and what works for each individual page.

  8. I definitely understand the love hate relationship with social media. One day I am feeling like I am doing amazing things and the next I feel like it’s all for not. But it really is true that its all about the relationships that you build with people and that takes time and interactions, and not just some bot putting up your stuff all the time. Although that can help too. Just make sure that you spend some you time on them every day as well. And definitely the two only to begin with is a good idea. You get so overwhelmed when you are trying to do several simultaneously. It doesn’t always work. And then you have to remember that some of the social media things really aren’t good for marketing your brand. You have to think what each platform does and ask yourself whether your brand has a place there. It might not.

I never ever liked social media before, it was tiresome and i never paid much attention to it. but ever since i started my blogging journey last year and experiencing the power it has first hand…i frikkin love it! it’s awesome and i’ve met so so many wonderfully supportive souls online. It’s a wonderful platform to turn your mess into your message…

  10. It can be challenging especially since social media sites tend to change their analytics from time to time. But, giving up is not an option if you’re really dedicated. There are plenty of ways to flourish using your social media accounts.

    • Yes that is true. I have recently had to change things up completely.

  11. This is something that’s tough to discuss. Social media can be very rewarding in the end, yes it may take a lot of work but it’s going to be great for your business.

    • It’s about finding where your audience is Carol and getting to know them too.

    • You’re right they don’t, so that’s why you post daily engaging content that has nothing to do with your business.

  12. Before I started blogging last January, I so love using social media for connections and learning new stuff online, they’re my main blogging site before (if that’s a great way to say it). But social media for your blog, is really challenging and fun for me.

    • I don’t know about you, but i have never been scared by a challenge.
